Bit of Brighton

Another little collection of things I've been up to.

We had a class trip to London where we went to the different playing spaces that would have been used in late Medieval dramas - pretty much everything before commercial theatres. The group had a quick jaunt around the Museum of London, then to the foundation of an old Roman Amphitheatre. There wasn't much to see, certainly no colosseum, but it's always cool to think of the history that constantly hidden under London. That exhibit also had a copy of the First Folio, the first published works of Shakespeare and one of the original sources we have to even know his work existed.

We got to go to the Armourer's guildhall, which was beautiful, and has been added to the mental image of what my perfect house would look like. We also quickly walked to St. Paul's Cathedral, went around there for a bit before hopping back on the bus. It was just a quick skip around the city but fun nonetheless.

For a bit more of a trip, this weekend Esther and I caught the train to Brighton. The trip took about 2 hours and we were starving so when we got there we headed straight for a Mexican restaurant. I can't even remember the name of what I ordered, it has said 'pork scrapings' as a description so I had thought it was going to be meat-ish. It was like meat bubblewrap, pop-corn looking but just filled with air, weirdest thing ever. The streets were packed with people and stalls and vintage stores and general craziness.

We walked along the pier and the sea side. The weather's still really windy but it so badly wants to be spring, the sun made a quick cameo but it was still pretty cold. After the tourist stops were checked off the list, the Pier, the Royal Pavilion, the Bandstand etc we headed back to the shops. I figured this was my 'treat yo self' weekend. For those who don't watch the tv show Parks and Recreation a) you should b) it's basically means being an impulsive buyer for a day. So frugality went semi-out the window, it still sat on the sill, while I went and bought 2 dresses, a necklace, a scarf and some books.

Sunday there was a reenacters market and I once again pried open my wallet to buy fabric for a new dress that I'll hopefully be starting on. The shops themselves were fun with dubious degrees of authenticity but very tempting. SQUIRREL!
